Tips for students starting their first year at University of Mannheim
Studying in New University could be exciting and also challenging . Therefore, I am listing down here some of the tips which could be helpful for you as a new student in the University of Mannheim:
The first thing first open the bank account with Santander if you already don't have any EU account. I found it easier and fast to open the account with them because it is located close to the University and can speak English.
Get to know about the University campus. To avoid any last minute delay before your lecture.
know the pattern of examination as soon as possible. The examination time is very short (45 to 60 minutes) therefore you need to learn everything by heart and write fast. Thus, start learning and reading the course materials from day one.
Make quality friends over quantity. Make study group on facebook. Participate in various University sports offering (https://www.hochschulsport.uni-mannheim.de/angebote/aktueller_zeitraum/index_heute.html), where you can book your place in advance, some of them are also free. Besides that you could find details of events to meet people in the facebook page on University of Mannheim.
Be open and approach people for help immediately as soon you find it difficult to adjust in a group or have problem with any module.Post your quires on various Mannheim facebook group that is specific to your course.
Reach out to professors during their office our and resolve any quiries ahead of examinations, Also do not hesitate to ask questions during lecture.
If you have to select modules in first semester than do not be ambitious and only take 4–5 courses. This will help you to adjust in the university without much pressure and have enough time to understand the examination pattern. then once you are settled in new university then in second semester you can study more courses and score well.
Try to book accommodation in city centre as it also saves your tram cost of 160 euro per semester. Also university is very close to the city centre only 3 minutes. This helps a-lot during examination to save time and easily study in library.
Download offline google map of the city because it made out of different blocks and sometimes it is quite confusing to locate any place.
For food you can eat in Mensa which is located in the university and known for it cheap good amount of food. Next you can also try cafe Vienna (located in S1 block) and Doner shop where you get to eat decently priced food.
Lastly, try to find part time job to make yourself employable.
